Expert Verdict

Deep process data historian with enterprise-scale integration reach.

AVEVA (formerly OSIsoft PI) is a long-established process industry historian and real-time data infrastructure platform. The PI System collects, stores, and analyzes time-series data from PLCs, DCS systems, and sensors at scales no other platform in this review approaches. Major oil and gas companies run millions of data points through AVEVA continuously.

The integration breadth is extraordinary. AVEVA connects to any industrial system via its connector library, and the open API publishes data to Azure, AWS, and SAP. Machine learning and predictive analytics capabilities have expanded significantly since the AVEVA/OSIsoft merger.

AVEVA is an enterprise infrastructure investment: pricing is custom, implementation requires specialized consultants, and the platform is designed for organizations managing hundreds of critical assets across large facilities.

The Bottom Line: AVEVA is the right infrastructure choice for large process manufacturers and utilities operating at enterprise scale. The PI System ecosystem is deeply entrenched in oil and gas, power, and chemical processing, often as the foundational layer on which other tools are built.
